Darwin, Australia Installs Sensor-Enabled Lighting

Telstra – Australia’s largest telecommunications company – has begun installing smart sensor enabled LED lighting in Bicentennial Park as part of the City of Darwin’s Smart City Strategy. The pathway lighting in the park will be upgraded with new light poles, LED smart lights and controllers to enhance safety, reduce energy consumption, and provide dynamic lighting.

Switching on Darwin will deliver a range of smart technologies including:

  • Upgrading street lights to LED smart lighting;
  • Extension of free Wi-Fi network;
  • CCTV and video analytics;
  • Sensors for vehicle and pedestrian movement analysis;
  • Smart parking technology;
  • Micro-climate monitoring systems; and,
  • A smart city platform

Telstra will also deliver a suite of smart technologies in the city center such as LED smart lighting, smart parking, Wi-Fi, CCTV and video analytics.

The Switching on Darwin project was the largest grant funded under the Australian Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program receiving $5million AU, with the Northern Territory Government contributing $2.5million and City of Darwin investing $2.5million.

This project will create efficiencies in our service delivery and provide data provision and analysis through the deployment of smart technology solutions.”
